In essence, a license is an agreement that allows us the use of your artwork, designs, and name for a specified period of time. It represents a huge opportunity for illustrators and artists as it allows them to create revenue repeatedly from one piece of artwork, from various manufacturers, potentially for many years.

In creating a new license with you we would first review your portfolio (see artist submission guidelines) If we are interested in using your art, we would then make a proposal to you that list all the terms we would agree too. This would include which art we want to use, specifying what products it would be used on, for the period of time, and how much we would pay. If you are in agreement with our offer, we would put it into contract form, and get started creating great products!

Art licensing has become very mainstream in the last few years, so most of the structure has become standard and similar between various companies.

I prefer artists to enter into licensing arrangements with us with a very clear idea of what to expect, so I am very open in sharing details of a typical licensing arrangement with SBCD.

Some of the standards that are industry wide are:

1. Paying royalty on net sales as actually invoiced to our customers. (no deductions for manufacturing costs)
2. Royalties paid quarterly , 30 days after close of the calendar quarter
3. Artist has approval rights on our use of their designs
4. Use of art for a limited period of time, with rights reverting to artist at close of contract
5. Artists may license same art to other companies with non competing products, however, we expect exclusivity of design use for our product type, and in some cases our medium (ceramic and /or glass).
6. We pay a royalty rate between : 3-6%, with an appropriate advance and guarantee negotiated with each artist. In certain cases we are willing to pay a “flat fee”.

Licensing has become an outstanding way for talented artists and illustrators to significantly enhance their earnings. As an artist myself, and as someone whose company is built on the talent of gifted people such as yourself, I am always happy to offer guidance and advice to further your success.

In particular, if you are seeking representation, let me know, and I can put you in touch with some of the leading agents. Also, I can put you in touch with an amazing freelance art director whose specialty is assisting illustrators in orienting their artwork towards giftware licensing, and creating promotional material that will appeal to manufacturers such as SBCD.
